Novo Bojovic, who kicked a last-second field goal to give Michigan a 20-18 victory over the Blitz in its season-opener, kicked a 19-yarder with 32 seconds remaining to help the Panthers overcome four costly turnovers for a 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers.
Pittsburgh running back Mike Rozier gained 26 yards in 11 carries after a 27-yard first game, which Pittsburgh lost to Oklahoma 7-3. Bojovic's field goal capped a drive that began at the Michigan 19-yard line following a 28-yard field goal by Pittsburgh's Tony Lee which tied the game, 24-24. with 3:44 to play.
Michigan quarterback Bobby Hebert, who left the game for three plays after being shaken up by a third-quarter tackle, hit Derek Holloway for 15 yards and found Anthony Carter along the right sideline for a 48-yard gain. The Panthers had a touchdown run of eight yards by Ken Lacy nullified by a holding penalty against former Bears tight end Mike Cobb. But four plays later, Bojovic kicked his field goal to delight a record regular season crowd of 44,485.
Lee's field goal was set up by a fumble by Michigan's Terry Miller at the Panthers' 18. It was Miller's second fumble of the game. He fumbled at the goal line with 13 seconds remaining in the first half.
Michigan, which allowed Pittsburgh only three first downs in the second half, stopped Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier on three straight carries, forcing the Maulers to settle for a field goal.
Pittsburgh took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in 13 plays to the team's first touchdown ever, a 1-yard dive by Rozier Michigan tied the game early in the second quarter on a 7-yard pass from Hebert to Cobb, but Pittsburgh regained the lead with 4:02 remaining in the first half when strong safety Dan Short intercepted an Hebert pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown.
Hebert completed 17 of 24 passes for 237 yards. His favorite target once again was Carter, who caught six passes for 121 yards.
