March 6, 1984: USFL Press Conference & Campaign for a Miami Franchise

News story on the USFL announcing they were bringing a team to Miami. Commissioner Chet Simmons claimed there were eight groups interested investing in a team for the city of Miami.

Joe Robbie owner of the Miami Dolphins had just announced the day before that he would be building a 73,000 seat stadium for his team making the Orange Bowl obsolete.

The downside with the USFL expansion plans in Miami were that they had announced a move to the fall in 1984 so any new owner would have to compete with the Dolphins. Also the city had to approve a $150 million dollar bond so the Orange Bowl can be renovated. Nonetheless Commissioner Chet Simmons stated with or without the bond the USFL would have a franchise in Miami playing in 1985. Of course we all know now that never happened.

This is where the story really begins and how Howard Schnellenberger started to get involved behind the scenes.
