Herschel Walker scored the winning touchdown with 24 seconds left and Doug Flutie passed for two touchdowns as the New Jersey Generals rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth period to beat the Tampa Bay Bandits 28-24 Sunday in the United States Football League.
Flutie started the comeback when, with 5:05 remaining, he capped a 62-yard drive by scrambling away from three tacklers and firing a 7-yard scoring pass to Walter Broughton. Then, with 24 seconds left, Walker took a pitch out and raced 13 yards around the right end for the winning touchdown. The Generals are 3-2.
Tampa Bay, also 3-2, had rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit. The Bandits tied it 2:13 into the third period when Fred Nordgren sacked Flutie, causing a fumble which was picked up by defensive back Bruce Vaughan, who ran 3 yards for a touchdown.
The Bandits went ahead 21-14 on the first play of the fourth quarter when quarterback John Reaves combined with Eric Truvlllion on a 64-yard touchdown play. A 20-yard field goal by Zenon Andrusyshyn with 9:47 left widened the Bandits lead to 24-14.
Flutie was 11 for 22 passing attempts for 165 yards while Walker rushed for 109 yards in 24 carries. Reaves completed 20 of 39 attempts for 410 yards.
